Whilst many will have heard of me as the Chairman of the Rifles London Club I actually live near Wallingford in Oxfordshire. The Rifles has the freedom of Wallingford which comes to us through the Royal Berkshire Regiment, whose badge adorns the front of the Town Hall. Therefore I would like to invite all members of The Rifles family in Bucks, Berks and Oxon (and anyone else who fancies it) to help me with a fund raising effort to be held in Wallingford in aid of The Rifles Care for Casualties appeal.
I actually live in South Moreton, just outside Wallingford, where we have a “White Collar” boxing gym based in old barns in the farmyard. I started fitness training there three years ago, never intending actually to get in the ring, now aged fifty. However, the subject came up of which charity should benefit from our charity evening on the 29th May and I suggested Care for Casualties. This idea was taken up with alacrity and it seemed a bit churlish not to join in! So on the 29th May at The Regal centre in Wallingford, Simon “The Colonel” Hill will step into the ring with John “The Sweeny” Pennycook to battle it out once and for all! Will Rifle Green triumph over the Boy in Blue or will it be the other way around? I will be off to a flying start with moral support as the boxing team from 4RIFLES are coming up to run the door for us and two of them will also fight. We are also hoping that The Waterloo Band of The Rifles will be on hand to play the fighters in. There will also be a video shown bringing people up-to-date with what our battalions have been doing in Afghanistan and Iraq, and why money raised by Care of Casualties is so important.
What we really need to make the evening a huge success is to have as many past and present Riflemen to turn up as possible to put bums on seats and swell the proceeds and to support those of us who are battling it out in the ring for this cause. Tickets are available on www.southmoretonboxingclub.com or by calling 07981 328326 and if people can’t make it they can also sponsor me directly on www.justgiving.com/trrt/Rumble-for-The-Rifles . All other details are on the attached flyer.
Please could you be so kind as to circulate these details amongst The Rifles community in Bucks, Berks & Oxon and I hope to see a good number of them there on the night.
Best wishes
