Hon. President: Bernard CornwellTrustees: Malcolm Craddock and Muir Sutherland
Dear Fellow Riflemen,
Let me introduce myself and the Sharpe Appreciation Society (SAS no less!).I am Jeffrey Yang, an ex-Army Cadet Force officer who was proud to have worn a ‘Jacket of Green’.I do not work any more, having gone blind 10 years ago.
I recently became the editor for the SAS Bulletin. Please click HERE to read the latest edition. On bringing attention to the SAS and its Bulletin to friends at RHQ in Winchester, I was told that many members of our various predecessor and current regiments did not know of the existence of the SAS, and it was thought that many of you would be interested in its activities.
The SAS is the official fan club for Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe books, and the Sharpe films. The purpose of the society is to promote the Sharpe books and films, but also to take an active interest in the soldiers who were the real inspiration for the books and films. It does not limit itself to the 95th Rifles, but rather looks to the whole of the British Army of the Napoleonic era.
Principal activities of the SAS-
Publication of 4 Bulletins per annum (20 A4 pages per issue).
One battlefield trip per annum, generally to Spain and Portugal every other year, and NW Europe/Waterloo in the intervening years.
SAS Roadshow at various historical sites in the summer, when members or the public can see film props, particularly the weaponry, and buy merchandise.
A Convention every 3 or 4 years, when members can meet each other and the cast of the film series.
It is being decided at the moment how we can introduce the SAS to the wider regimental family; in the meantime, those of you who are on email will get a free copy of the SAS Bulletin. However, I would urge you to join the SAS in your own right, as the current members have to pay a subscription to get the eBulletin or the hard copy version. You can join the society via the merchandise page of its website at:
If you decide to so do, please mention that you are ex-RGJ/Rifles in the comments when you join, and I do hope that many of you will choose to join us.
